How to Choose the Right Fountain Pen Nib Size

How to Choose the Right Fountain Pen Nib Size

Why Nib Size Matters More Than You Think

When people buy their first fountain pen, they often focus entirely on the pen's looks or price — and completely overlook the nib size. This is a mistake. The nib is the heart of a fountain pen. It determines how thick your lines are, how much ink flows, and ultimately how enjoyable the writing experience feels.

Choose the wrong nib size and even an expensive pen can feel frustrating. Choose the right one and even a budget pen can feel like a dream. This guide will help you make the right choice.

Understanding Nib Size Designations

Most fountain pen manufacturers use a standard set of size labels, though the actual line width can vary between brands (Japanese nibs, for example, tend to run finer than European nibs of the same designation).

Extra Fine (EF)

Extra Fine nibs produce the thinnest lines — typically around 0.3–0.4mm. They're ideal for:

  • People with small, neat handwriting
  • Writing in small notebooks or planners
  • Technical writing, annotations, or margin notes
  • Urdu script, which often requires fine detail

Caution: EF nibs are more prone to catching on rough paper and can feel scratchy if the nib isn't well-tuned. They're best paired with smooth, quality paper.

Fine (F)

Fine nibs are the most popular choice for everyday writing, especially in Pakistan and across Asia where smaller handwriting is common. They produce lines around 0.4–0.5mm — thin enough for neat writing but smooth enough to glide easily.

If you're unsure what to choose, Fine is the safest starting point for most Pakistani writers.

Medium (M)

Medium nibs produce lines around 0.5–0.7mm. They're the standard in Western countries and offer a wetter, more expressive writing experience. Medium nibs are great for:

  • Journaling and longer writing sessions
  • People who enjoy seeing ink shading and sheen
  • Writers with larger, more open handwriting
  • Calligraphy practice (standard scripts)

Broad (B)

Broad nibs lay down thick, bold lines and are best suited for signatures, headings, or decorative writing. They're not ideal for everyday note-taking as lines can bleed on lower-quality paper.

Stub and Italic Nibs

These are specialty nibs with a flat, rectangular tip that creates thick downstrokes and thin cross-strokes — giving your writing a calligraphic look without any special technique. Stub nibs are a favorite among people who want their everyday handwriting to look more elegant.

Japanese vs. European Nib Sizing

This is crucial to understand. A Japanese Fine nib writes like a European Extra Fine. A Japanese Medium writes like a European Fine. Japanese manufacturers (Pilot, Platinum, Sailor) tend to produce finer lines than their European counterparts (Lamy, Pelican, Waterman) at the same size designation.

So if you're buying a Pilot pen, consider going one size up from what you'd normally choose. If you usually prefer Fine, try a Medium from Pilot.

How Your Paper Affects Nib Choice

The paper you write on significantly affects how a nib performs. On smooth, fountain-pen-friendly paper, even an EF nib glides beautifully. On rough or absorbent paper (like many local notebooks), finer nibs can catch and scratch while broader nibs may cause feathering and bleed-through.

If you're writing on standard local paper, a Fine or Medium nib will generally perform better than an Extra Fine.

Nib Size Recommendations by Use Case

  • Student note-taking: Fine (F) — clean lines, works on most paper
  • Urdu/Arabic script: Extra Fine (EF) or Fine (F)
  • Journaling: Medium (M) — enjoy the ink's color and character
  • Calligraphy practice: Stub 1.1mm or Italic
  • Signatures: Broad (B) or Medium (M)
  • Office/professional use: Fine (F) or Medium (M)

Can You Change a Nib?

On many pens, yes! Pens like the Jinhao x750, Lamy Safari, and TWSBI Eco have interchangeable nibs, allowing you to swap sizes without buying a new pen. This is a great way to experiment once you know what you like.
